Hon. Mangoma in jail again
Movement for Democratic Change
March 26, 2011
MDC Deputy Treasurer-General
and Energy and Power Development Minister, Hon. Elton Mangoma was
on Friday remanded in custody after he was indicted for trial on
yet another forged charge of abusing a public office. The false
allegations against Hon. Mangoma are that last year, he abused public
office by irregularly awarding a multi-million- dollar tender to
purchase electricity meters by the Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission
and Distribution Company (ZETDC), a subsidiary of Zesa.
He appeared at the Harare
Magistrates' Courts and was remanded in custody after the
State indicted him to 18 July at the High Court for trial at the
High Court. Hon. Mangoma is on bail on another charge after his
arrest early this month on false allegations of corruptly sealing
a fuel deal with a South African company without going to tender.
He was released
by the High Court on US$5 000 bail.
Granting Hon. Mangoma
bail last week, Justice Samuel Kudya said the State's case
was weak. The judge added the State had scant facts opposing Hon.
Mangoma's bail. He said said the actions of Hon. Mangoma in assisting
in the procurement of fuel were a response to a national crisis
and the people of Zimbabwe were looking up to him as Energy Minister
to solve the crisis. "The State's case will be an uphill
battle to convince the court. The case against the applicant cannot
be said to be strong," said Justice Kudya.
Addressing a press conference
on Friday, MDC Secretary-General Hon. Tendai Biti said the MDC was
shocked by the swiftness by the police and State in arresting Hon.
Mangoma and indicting and remanding him in custody.
