Hon. Mangoma granted US$5 000 bail

Hon. Elton Mangoma, the MDC Deputy Treasurer - General and Energy and Power Development Minister who was arrested last week was today granted a US$5 000 bail by High Court judge, Justice Samuel Kudya. Hon. Mangoma who is facing trumped - up charges of abusing a public office was committed at the Harare Remand Prison. He was indicted for trial at the High Court on 28 March.

The State was opposing bail alleging that Hon. Mangoma was a flight risk and would interfere with State witnesses. However, Justice Kudya dismissed the State's claims saying the State had no tangible facts to warrant Hon. Mangoma's conviction. The judge added the State had scant facts against Hon. Mangoma.

The judge said the actions of Hon. Mangoma in assisting in the procurement of fuel were a response to a national crisis and the people of Zimbabwe were looking up to him for resolve the crisis. "The State's case will be an uphill battle to convince the court. The case against the applicant cannot be said to be strong," said the judge.

Hon. Mangoma was ordered to report once a week at Malborough Police Station and to surrender his passport.
