MDC Harare province calls on Zanu PF to stop slashing of maize crop
Movement for Democratic Change
January 13, 2011

The MDC Harare province strongly condemns the irrational slashing of maize crops in high density areas by some rebel Zanu PF Harare City Council employees who are bent on tarnishing the image of a party of excellence - the MDC. Harare province further notes with concern that the employees are falsely claiming that they were assigned by the councillors to slash the maize in a desperate bid by Zanu PF to tarnish the image of the democratically elected councillors who are all from the MDC.

We are dismayed by the cheap propaganda of Zanu PF Harare province chairperson, Amos Midzi and Christopher Mutsvangwa who are falsely claiming it is the councillors who ordered the destruction. The two were rejected by the voters in the March 2008 parliamentary elections. As a party, the MDC is a pro - poor party that supports self sustenance of the people of Zimbabwe both in urban and rural communities.

There is no way that the MDC councillors would sanction the slashing of the maize crops of the same people who voted them into office. It is clear that those behind the slashing of the maize crop are from Zanu PF who are still bitter and failing to come to terms with the fact that the people of Harare and the rest of Zimbabwe rejected them in the 2008 elections. The MDC will never destory people's property like what Zanu PF did in 2005 when it destroyed tens of thousands of people's homes and livelihoods under Operation Murambatsvina.

We urge those behind the slashing of the maize crop to immediately desist from such acts and let the residents of Harare harvest their crops in peace. The MDC would however, like to urge the residents of Harare who are practising urban agriculture to consider envrionmental hazards and not grow crops in undesignated areas for the benefit of every resident. The MDC is committed to the creation and sustenance of a local - government system that enjoys the confidence of the people of Zimbabwe through its capacity to deliver quality services in a democratic and participatory manner. The MDC is a party that is always mindful that it is answreable to the local populace.
