Attack on Hon Khupe an indictment on Zimbabwe's partisan security
sector
Movement for Democratic Change
November
17, 2010
The MDC condemns
the humiliation and attack on Zimbabwe's Deputy Prime Minister,
Thokozani Khupe by State security agents who wished to search her
as condition before she attended a Cabinet meeting in Harare on
Tuesday. State security agents stopped Hon Khupe for a body search
as she arrived for a Cabinet meeting at Munhumutapa Building in
Harare on Tuesday morning. The MDC is shocked by that kind of harassment,
coming as it does from state security agents who are supposed to
protect and respect national leaders at all times.
Cabinet meets
every Tuesday to examine and debate crucial issues affecting ordinary
Zimbabweans. We commend Hon Khupe for her refusal to subject herself
to debasement through body searches, normally conducted on convicted
criminals. The action of these security agents is a clear sign of
determined effort by those seeking to sabotage the inclusive government.
Such elements wish to subvert our Constitutional order and to frustrate
national leaders from their legitimate responsibilities.
The MDC calls
for an immediate investigation into the incident. Those found to
be on the wrong side of the demands of the new dispensation must
face stern disciplinary action, lest they erode confidence and hope
in the new dispensation. It is an insult to do a body search on
Deputy Prime Minister Hon. Khupe, an elected Member of Parliament
and Vice President of the MDC. The party won the March 29 2008
election and has the mandate of the people to deliver Zimbabwe
from forces of evil and darkness after three decades of Zanu PF
failures, corruption and tyranny.
Actors in the
state security sector must be at the forefront of spurring national
confidence through a professional, non-partisan and impartial conduct
at all times. That sector is already mired in controversy as some
of its agents have openly aligned themselves to Zanu PF and soiled
their Constitutional mandate. They have long compromised themselves
to a point where they are unable to guarantee security and protection
to the people; neither do they respect the rule of law.
For the above
reason, the MDC reiterates its loud calls for comprehensive security
sector reform to align it to our national values and expectations.
We urge the inclusive government to take seriously the creation
of an atmosphere of confidence in state institutions. No one can
take this country seriously when its national leaders are humiliated
by their civil servants.
