Thousands attend MDC 11th anniversary provincial rallies
Movement for Democratic Change
November
11, 2010
The MDC will
not abandon the Constitution - making process despite the
process being flawed due to violence and intimidation by Zanu PF
supporters, the MDC National Chairperson, Hon. Lovemore Moyo has
said. Hon. Moyo said this while addressing thousands of MDC supporters
at Mashate Business Centre in Masvingo Central at the MDC 11th anniversary
celebrations on Sunday.
"The MDC
denounces the false propaganda in the State media that we are advocating
for a NO vote in the referendum next year," he said. "The
Constitution - making process is an MDC agenda, it is a people's
agenda that we are not abandoning despite problems that were encountered
during the gathering of the people's views". Hon. Moyo
who is the Speaker of Parliament, paid tribute to MPs from Masvingo
who were fighting for the completion of Tokwe - Mukosi dam
in the province.
Once complete,
the dam will be the largest inland dam in the country and will boost
agriculture and tourism sectors. Speaking at the same rally, the
MDC Women's Assembly chairperson and Co - Home Affairs
minister, Hon. Theresa Makone urged the chiefs and police officers
not to work for political parties as they would compromise their
duties and standing in the communities they serve.
Mufakose MP
and Minister of Labour and Social Welfare, Hon. Paurina Mpariwa
said her ministry was fighting for the improvement of the elderly
in the 2011 national budget. During the rally, Masvingo Central
MP, Hon. Jefferyson Chitando launched the constituency development
fund. The fund will see the refurbishment of over ten schools, rehabilitation
of boreholes and roads and creation of nutritional gardens. The
rally was attended by several senior MDC officials including the
national spokesperson, Hon. Nelson Chamisa, Nketa MP, Hon. Seiso
Moyo, MPs and councillors.
Meanwhile, the
MDC Secretary - General, Hon. Tendai Biti has said since the
formation of the MDC, 11 years ago, the Party had managed to move
mountains by fighting the dictatorship of Zanu PF and Robert Mugabe.
He was addressing over 5 000 MDC supporters at another MDC 11th
anniversary celebrations at Manjiri Primary School in Musikavanhu,
Manicaland province on Saturday.
Hon. Biti said
the 11 years that the MDC had been in existence; the Party had managed
to move mountains, fighting the evil dictatorship of Zanu PF and
Robert Mugabe. "Fighting a dictatorship like Mugabe and Zanu
PF is never easy. Africa has been unfortunate to have dictators
across the continent but there has been no evil dictator like Mugabe
in Zimbabwe. "But we are going to win this war and bring democracy
in Zimbabwe through the ballot box," Hon. Biti said.
He said the
struggle that the MDC started on 11 September 1999 should not be
taken for granted. "We should continue with the struggle remembering
our fallen heroes such as Isaac Matongo, Mai Susan Tsvangirai, Talent
Mabika, Tichaona Chiminya, Getrude Mthombeni and Tonderai Ndira
among others who fought hard in bringing democracy to Zimbabwe,"
he said. The celebratory rally was attended by the entire Manicaland
provincial executive led by the chairperson, Hon. Patrick Chitaka,
MPs and councillors.
