The MDC is waiting
for a report from the Copac management committee on the committee's
evaluation of the outreach meetings. However, the MDC has said it
notes with concern the violence that took place in Harare and Chitungwiza
as the Copac outreach meetings drew to an end at the weekend. An
MDC activist, Jonsaya Manyere from Harare South is battling for
his life in hospital after he was assaulted and stabbed on the head
by the Zanu PF hooligans after making a contribution at a Copac
meeting on Saturday at St Johns Retreat in Waterfalls.
Eric Murai, the MDC provincial Youth Assembly Vice
Secretary, Diana Nyikadzino, the MDC Harare provincial administrator,
Harare provincial driver Phineas Nhatarikwa an MDC activist, Jonsaya
Manyere and two journalists, Andrisen Manyere and Nkosana Dhlamini
were all arrested at St Johns Retreat. In Hatcliffe, police arrested
two MDC members; James Katso, Peter Garanewako and Tinashe Mutyaso
soon after the Copac meeting on Sunday. The three had made robust
contributions during the hearings. Garanewako was badly beaten before
being handed over to police officers, who were driving a ZRP Nissan
single cab registration Number ZRP 3195 M. They were all released
after paying US$20 each.
Bindura Mayor, Daniso Wakatama and two MDC councillors,
Rindai Muchemwa and Christopher Mazembe who were facing fabricated
charges of criminal abuse of office and flouting tender procedures
acquitted on Friday at the Bindura magistrate court. MDC secretary
for ward 13 in Hwange, Vincent Gomani was on Saturday arrested after
police raided his home and confiscated two portable radios. Charges
being laid against him are still unclear.
