Zimbabweans rallied to participate in constitution-making
Movement
for Democratic Change
June 07,
2010
The people of
Zimbabwe have been urged to participate in the forthcoming Constitution-making
process, which kick starts across the country on 15 June. The
call was made at the MDC "Real Change" rallies that
were held across the country at the weekend and attended by thousands
of party supporters. Addressing a rally at Trenance Hall in Bulawayo
Central on Sunday, Lobengula MP Hon. Samuel Sipepa Nkomo urged the
people of Bulawayo to participate in the Constitution-making process
as it was their democratic right.
"Zanu PF will always
drag its feet when it comes to issues that concern people's
democratic rights. MDC wants a people-driven Constitution that will
make sure that the people's rights are respected and that
they have a properly elected government of their choice,"
he said. Addressing the same rally, Bulawayo East MP, Hon. Tabitha
Khumalo said it was important for communities and citizens to freely
air their views so that they can be captured in the new Constitution.
In Harare, a rally was
held at Munyarari shopping centre in Glen View South, where the
Harare provincial chairperson and Chikomo senator, Hon. Morgan Femai
said it was imperative that the people of Zimbabwe took part in
the Constitution-making process as it was the only way that the
country's future would be shaped.
"The writing of
a people-driven Constitution has always been part of the MDC's
main goals and now that the process is starting, I want to urge
you all to be part of this historic occasion," Senator Femai
said.
MDC Women's Assembly
chairperson and Harare North MP, Hon. Theresa Makone addressed a
rally at Wadzanai Business Centre in Shamva, Mashonaland Central
province where she encouraged the women to take part in this Constitution-making
process so that their views are well represented. "Women should
be seen at the forefront of the Constitution-making process so that
our views are captured. We should not be left out in this process."
she said.
The rally was attended
by several senior MDC officials, but two other officials, Mash central
treasurer Gilbert Kagodora and Epworth MP Ellia Jembere were arrested
on trumped-up charges of undermining the President. Harare West
MP and deputy minister of Justice, Hon. Jessie Majome addressed
another rally in Mt Darwin North at Kapiripiri Business Centre where
she encouraged the people to come out in their large numbers and
participate in the drafting of a new Constitution.
In Manicaland province,
Hon. Giles Mutsekwa addressed a rally at Beit Hall in Dangamvura,
Mutare where he said that in Africa, it was possible to remove a
dictatorship through peaceful and democratic means. "Only
through the constitution can people elect leaders of their choice",
said Hon Mutsekwa.
Meanwhile, a celebration
rally was held at Ndawi Business Centre in Gutu North, Masvingo
on Saturday for Ward 41 councillor Fabian Mamombe where the local
leadership urged party supporters to remain vigilant in the face
of intimidation and harassment by the opposition Zanu PF.
