Movement
for Democratic Change
May 10, 2010
The MDC's
"Real Change" rallies were held across the country with
thousands of people turning up for the events. The main theme at
most of the rallies was the need for the people to gear themselves
for the forthcoming Constitution-making
process and ensuring that their voices are heard. On Saturday,
the MDC national organising secretary and Warren Park MP, Hon. Elias
Mudzuri addressed over 3 000 people in Warren Park 1, Harare.
Hon. Mudzuri, who is
also the Minister of Energy and Power Development, said his main
challenge was to see that there was enough electricity in each household
and business entity. "I am working on a comprehensive programme
that will see the country having better electricity supplies,"
he said. At Tsiga grounds in Mbare, Harare, the MDC deputy national
organising secretary, Hon. Morgen Komichi said it was important
for the people of Zimbabwe to take part in the Constitution-making
process.
The rally was attended
by over 2 000 people. Also on Saturday, over 5 000 people converged
at Honde Missiom in Mutasa Central where they were addressed by
the MP for the area, Hon. Trevor Saruwaka. "The Constitution-making
process is a people's project. As a result I urge you not
to lose heart over the delays being encountered in having the process
started. However, when it kicks off I would like to urge you to
come out in your thousands and participate.
"We want better
human rights in the new Constitution, "he said. The rally
was also attended by Mutasa South MP, Hon. Misheck Kagurabadza.
However, a rally that was supposed to be held at Patchway Mine in
Chakari was cancelled after rowdy Zanu PF youths besieged the venue
and disrupted the event. "We decided to cancel the rally due
to the rowdy behavior of the Zanu PF youths. We have since made
a report to the police and we hope that they will take action against
the perpetrators," said Moscow Chakabvapasi, the MDC Chakari
district chairperson.
Kadoma Central MP, Hon.
Editor Matamisa was supposed to be the main speaker at the rally.
In Bulawayo, Makokoba MP and MDC vice-president, Hon. Thokozani
Khupe said it was important for the people to retain their dignity.
"We need to eradicate poverty and restore human rights. People
should not continue to suffer 30 years after independence,"
said Hon Khupe, who is also the country's deputy Prime Minister.
The event was attended
by Hon. Gorden Moyo, the Minister of State in the Prime Minister's
office and Bulawayo Central MP Hon Dorcas Sibanda. Hon. Khupe also
took the occasion to donate eight wheelchairs to the disabled in
her constituency. On Sunday, two well-attended rallies were also
held in Muzarabani North at Utete business centre and Rushinga at
Chimhanda business centre, both in Mashonaland Central province.
Another rally was held in Highfield West at Mauruka bus stop in
Glen Norah.Over 2 000 people attended the rally where the clarion
