Hon Roy Bennett acquitted, to be sworn in as deputy minister of
agriculture
Movement
for Democratic Change
May 10, 2010
The MDC Treasurer-General,
Senator Roy Bennett was today acquitted of trumped-up banditry and
terrorism charges by a High Court judge, leaving no hindrance whatsoever
to his swearing-in as deputy minister of agriculture. The MDC stands
vindicated that the concocted charges against Hon Bennett were political
and that his only crime was that he is MDC and that he is a democrat
It was clear
from Justice Chinembiri Bhunu's judgement that the porosity
of the State case was astounding and overwhelming. The so-called
State witnesses were arrogant and appalling, especially the so-called
IT expert, who the Judge described as having "amazing ignorance."
The judiciary has clearly assisted in the resolution of one of the
outstanding issues of the inclusive government. As a party, we look
forward to the speedy swearing-in of Hon Bennett to his position
as deputy minister of Agriculture where the party deployed him.
His acquittal
leaves the enemies of real change with no excuse whatsoever as to
why Hon Bennett cannot be allowed to serve his country. His acquittal
is also an indictment on the person and office of the Attorney-General
who has wasted the taxpayer's money in besmirching and persecuting
an innocent Zimbabwean. The MDC is a party of excellence. We have
never believed in the politics of violent regime change. We have
always been agents and disciples of peaceful, non-violent and democratic
means and processes of regime change. It is no wonder that the so-called
terrorism charges against Hon Bennett have failed to stick, just
as similar charges against several MDC activists have continued
to crumble like a deck of cards over the past 10 years.
MDC cadres have
always been subjected to all sorts of trials and tribulations. We
have faced persecution, murder, arrests and arson. With God on our
side, we have always prevailed because no one can stop an idea whose
hour has come. Zimbabweans deserve real change. Zimbabweans want
hope, security, dignity, freedom and prosperity. And this week,
Zimbabweans expect the swearing-in of their deputy minister of Agriculture
so that he begins the national duty of assisting in mitigating yet
another season of hunger and starvation in most parts of the country.
