  • Statement by MDC Bulawayo Province Youth Assembly
    Movement for Democratic Change
    May 07, 2010

The MDC Bulawayo Province Youth assembly today finally handed in their petition to the Minister of Justice, the Attorney General and the Organ on National Healing and Reconciliation after failing twice to hold a peaceful procession in the city under unclear terms by the police. The demonstration and petition are an expression of the anger and frustration against State sponsored violence and the inaction by the office of the Attorney General in prosecuting known ZANU PF thugs who committed gross human rights abuses between 29 March and June 27 and still continue to unleash more terror on people's choices.

We are concerned by the grave silence by the AGs office on known perpetrators of violence who continue to walk scott free and roam our streets and yet they are the ones that claimed the lives of our brothers Mthokozisi Ncube, Tonderai Ndira, Better Chokururama, Godfrey Kauzani and many others. This is evident that the people of Zimbabwe are not protected by the law and shows that the police need to be reformed. Two years into the GPA, the youths are still not employed, education remains inaccessible, air waves remain arrested in monopoly, state agents remain unreformed, a people driven constitution is stalling and perpetrators of violence are roaming the streets even when the MDC furnished the AG's office with a detailed dossier of the murderers.

Article 6 of the GPA clearly says that all parties in the negotiated government should fully commit to a people driven constitution. Article 18.5 (c) of the of the GPA is very clear on what this transitional authority must do in respect of the violence that visited this country before and after the harmonized plebiscite of 2008. For the avoidance of doubt, this article calls on all political parties in this transitional authority to "apply the laws of this country fully and impartially in bringing all perpetrators of politically motivated violence to book".

We state here and now that we want the GPA talks to come to an end and to have all arson bombers, rapists, murderers and kidnappers brought to book so that a democratic Zimbabwe can be built.

We are further concerned by the salient action on Gukurahundi in this region that claimed 20 000 of our people and the arrest of fellow brothers who talk about it and have documented it. We want to remind the authorities that time will not let us forget but only justice is what we are waiting for. The state should take full responsibility in the likely event that people turn against each other to correct the effects of the many 'moments of madness' that are bent in the nation as Mugabe clings to power against the peoples choice.

We restate that Robert Mugabe lost the last elections to MDC president Morgan Richard Tsvangirai and every one knows it. We are bothered by the inactive state of the Organ on National Healing and Reconciliation, a body that too is clearly provided for under Article VII(c) of the same GPA. This organ has failed to address political tensions caused by years of state-sponsored conflict because it does not have clear mandate and yet it is a precondition to the holding of free and fair elections in the country.

We are further disturbed by the abuse of our brothers and sisters by using them for political mileage and disturbances in exchange for alcohol and marijuana. We want jobs, food and security for all youths in Zimbabwe! As the MDC Youth in Bulawayo we believe in a new Zimbabwe where a conducive political environment exists so that the people can choose and reject leaders freely. We aspire for true patriotism, real democracy and evident self determination. We believe in real change and we shall deliver it to the people of Zimbabwe through our leadership!
