Thousands turn up at Chigonero burial in Mash Central
Movement for Democratic Change
April 28, 2010

Over 5 000 people today turned up to pay their last respects to the MDC Mashonaland Central provincial chairperson, Biggie Chigonero at Chigonero village in Guruve South. Mourners from across the political divide converged at the Chigonero homestead in ward 11 to pay their last respects where speaker after speaker described him as a fearless fighter for democracy.

Addressing mourners earlier in the day at Mvurwi Hall in Mvurwi, President Tsvangirai described Chigonero as a principled and fearless man. "I have known the late Chigonero since 1999. Since then I have known him as a courageous, principled and fearless man of conviction," President Tsvangirai said. He saluted the late chairperson for his unwavering dedication in fighting for democracy especially in the volatile Mashonaland Central province.

President Tsvangirai said Chigonero led the province with vigour and determination, which saw for the first time the MDC making in-roads and winning parliamentary and local council seats in the province. Later in the day, the mourners proceeded to Chigonero village where the deputy secretary-general, Hon. Tapiwa Mashakada said the late Chigonero was a hero of our struggle.

"We are gathered here to pay respect to the hero of our struggle. He was a hero of our struggle for democracy and real change," he said. MDC national spokesperson, Hon. Nelson Chamisa also spoke at the burial and described how the late Chigonero was part of the huge brigade of patriotic Zimbabweans who were determined to fight for real change.

"He was a defender of the MDC principles and fought hard to deliver real change in the country. Zimbabweans deserve real change, hope, freedom, democracy, security and prosperity and the late Chigonero fought hard to achieve these values. As a befitting tribute to him, we must continue to fight until we achieve the real change that he aspired for," he said.

Other senior officials who attended the burial include Southerton MP, Hon. Gift Chimanikire, Mazowe Central MP, Hon. Shepherd Mushonga, Guruve South MP (Zanu PF), Hon. Edward Chindori-Chininga, MDC Mashonaland Central executive and several MDC councillors in the province.
