President Tsvangirai heads to Guruve for Chigonero burial
Movement for Democratic Change
April 27, 2010

President Morgan Tsvangirai will tomorrow lead the MDC national leadership to the burial of Mashonaland Central provincial chairperson, Biggie Chigonero at Chigonero village in Guruve. Mr. Chigonero, 51, passed away on Sunday at Parirenyatwa hospital in Harare after a short illness.

President Tsvangirai will first address mourners at Mvurwi Hall at 10am before proceeding for the burial at Chigonero village in Guruve South at 2pm. As a party, we join the Chigonero family and the people of Mashonaland Central in mourning a gallant son who fought hard to bring real change to this volatile province. He joined the MDC at inception in 1999 and held various provincial positions until he was elected chairperson in 2006. He fought resolutely and tenaciously in bringing real change and democracy to Zimbabwe in general, and Mashonaland Central in particular. Mr Chigonero stood as a parliamentary candidate for Mazowe North in 2000, Guruve South in 2005 and Mazowe North in 2008.

Chigonero left an indelible imprint in the volatile province of Mashonaland Central. We derive consolation from the fact that he has not died in vain; that his death comes at a time when the party, under his leadership, has won parliamentary and significant local government seats in the province; with total control of Bindura town and Mazowe rural district council. The fitting tribute to him would be for us to complete the journey to a new Zimbabwe and a new beginning.

Mr. Chigonero was also at the forefront of spearheading relief efforts in the province in 2008 when Zanu PF unleashed unprecedented terror across the country following its overwhelming defeat at the hands of the MDC in the March 29 harmonised elections. Mr. Chigonero was born in 1959 in Guruve. He is survived by two wives, Feniet and Eva and seven children.
