MDC condemns arrest and harassment of councilors
Movement for Democratic Change (MDC)
April 09, 2010

The MDC condemns the arrest and harassment of eight Harare City councillors on Thursday on spurious criminal defamation charges after exposing Zanu PF officials for illegally acquiring council land.

The councillors, who are all from the MDC, were arrested for carrying out a special council investigation that unearthed illegal acquisition of prime council land by corrupt Zanu PF officials.

An investigation needs to be instituted on Ignatius Chombo and Philip Chiyangwa.

What is also worrying is that the police have also harassed and intimidated journalists from the private media especially, The Standard for reporting on the illegal acquisition of the land.

This is in serious breach of media freedom in the country.

The police are also keen to question Harare Mayor, Muchadeyi Masunda over the matter.

The MDC views the reprehensible arrests as politically motivated. There is no way the police can arrest innocent people at the behest of criminals who should in fact be the ones to be arrested.

We call upon the police to be non-partisan and carry-out proper investigations over the illegal acquisition of council land by these senior Zanu PF officials and to bring all the culprits to book.

As a party of excellence, the MDC condemns any form of corruption and calls for an immediate end to the ceaseless harassment of its officials
