MDC
youth wing hands a petition expressing anger against violence
Movement
for Democratic Change
March 19,
2010
MDC
Harare Province Youth Wing
The MDC Harare Province
Youth Wing today handed a petition to the Minister of justice, the
Attorney General and the Organ on National Healing and Reconciliation
as an expression of the anger and frustration against State sponsored
violence and the inaction by the office of the Attorney General
in prosecuting known Zanu PF thugs who committed gross human rights
abuses between 29 March and the sham 'election' of June 27 2008
We note with serious
concern the continued use of state institutions notably the office
of the AG, the police, the army and the youth militia to act against
the wishes of the people.
Of particular concern
to us is the inaction of the office of the AG to look into the circumstances
that led to the outbreak of violence during and after the run-up
to the harmonized election of 2008 which claimed the lives of such
comrades as Tonderai Ndira, Better Chokururama, Godfrey Kauzani
and many others.
We are further concerned
by the grave silence of the same office to act against the threats
being directed at the person and office of Prime Minister Morgan
Tsvangirai, the Head of Government and the winner of the last election
held in this country by a group of misguided thugs who are calling
themselves Zanu. P.F. youth. We need not restate that Mugabe was
defeated in the last election. And he knows this.
We state here and now
that we are ready to protect the Party and the person and office
of our Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai against such threats. We
are willing to pay for this struggle with the ultimate price.
We are further concerned
by the selective application of the rule of law in a manner that
is disgustingly in favor of Zanu.P.F, and the office of the AG is
an active player in this whole matrix.
Article 18.5
(c) of the of the GPA
is very clear on what this transitional authority must do in respect
of the violence that visited this country before and after the harmonized
plebiscite of 2008. For the avoidance of doubt, this article calls
on all political parties in this transitional authority to "apply
the laws of this country fully and impartially in bringing all perpetrators
of politically motivated violence to book".
More than 365 days into
the life of this inclusive government, nothing has been done to
bring those who callously killed, raped, maimed, tortured and committed
arson to book. This is despite the fact that the MDC has presented
the AG with a complete dossier of who did what during these dark
days of our history.
We remind the authorities
that time will not let us forget but only justice is what we are
waiting for and our patience is waning out and we want the state
to take full responsibility in the likely event that people turn
against each other to correct the effects of the madness that engulfed
the nation as Mugabe clung to power against the people.
We are further disturbed
by the inaction and moribund state of the Organ on National Healing
and Reconciliation, a body that too is clearly provided for under
Article VII(c) of the same GPA.
National healing and
reconciliation is a precondition to the holding of free and fair
elections in this country.
We condemn in the strongest
language those who continue to abuse our brothers and sisters from
the rural areas by bussing them, poorly dressed, underfed and under
the influence of marijuana and alcohol. The Youth of Zimbabwe want
jobs, food and security. They want a country that guarantees them
a prosperous tomorrow. Put simply, they yearn for real change.
As the MDC Youth
in Harare we believe in a new Zimbabwe where a conducive political
environment exists so that the people can choose and reject leaders
freely. This is the concept of patriotism, democracy and self determination
which we hold so dearly and aspire for. We believe in real change
and we shall deliver it to the people of Zimbabwe.
