Zanu
PF thugs must be arrested
Movement
for Democratic Change
March 25,
2010
The MDC calls
upon the police to immediately arrest the Zanu PF youths who have
threatened the office and person of the Prime Minister of Zimbabwe.
The Zanu PF
threat on party President and Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai is
a blatant attack not only on his person and office, but a reprehensible
criminal act that threatens the inclusive government and the Global
Political Agreement (GPA).
The MDC takes
these threats seriously as several attempts have been made on the
life of the Prime Minister. History is littered with serious attempts
to eliminate him, which have not been taken seriously by the police.
Ten years ago, some men attempted to throw him out of his office
window in the ninth floor of the Zimbabwe
Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) offices in Harare. On 11 March
2007, he was almost killed by police officers and hired assassins
who brutally attacked him.
It is inhuman
for Zanu PF to issue such a threat at a time the Prime Minister
is absent from official duties as a result of an operation on injuries
sustained on 11 March 2007. It is immoral, unAfrican and inhuman
to make the threats a week before the memorial service of his wife,
who was killed in a suspicious accident which may well have been
an attempt on his life.
Morgan Tsvangirai
is the Prime Minister of Zimbabwe. This is a litmus test for the
police and the security forces as the nation awaits to see the arrest
of the hired street urchins who threatened to take "action"
on the Prime Minister of the country, the undisputed winner of the
29 March 2008 elections. These youths were publicly incited by Politburo
members Rugare Gumbo and Absolom Sikhosana; clear evidence that
the opposition party's supreme decision making body is an
accomplice in this criminal act. All those persons implicated in
this dastardly act must immediately be brought to book.
The MDC wants
these youths and their sponsors arrested and charged. We call upon
SADC and the African Union, the guarantors of the GPA, to intervene
and resolve this blatant criminal act which may well be the beginning
of deliberate efforts to scuttle and kill a regional initiative
which had brought hope to the people of Zimbabwe.
We also call upon the public media to refrain from being complicit
by publicizing criminality against the Head of Government. Sowing
conflict and divisions in the inclusive government is inimical to
the national interest. The public media, especially The Herald must
be at the forefront of sounding melodious drums that promote unity
and not conflict, development and not hate, progress and not regression.
Zimbabweans
want real change. They want hope, dignity, security, prosperity
and freedom.
Together to the end, marching to a new Zimbabwe.
