MDC urges inclusive government to respect human rights
Movement for Democratic Change (MDC)
December 10, 2009

The MDC joins the rest of the world in celebrating human rights day.

There is still a lot of ground to be covered towards the respect of basic fundamental rights, especially considering the shooting by police of striking workers in Shabanie, the ceaseless persecution and arrest of political and civic activists as well as other human rights defenders such as labour leaders, lawyers and journalists.

The MDC is a product of processes and aspirations for a truly democratic society in which the people's inalienable rights are recognized and respected. The MDC is a broad-based people's movement whose struggle is characterized, punctuated and driven by the Zimbabwe's perennial desire to have credible national institutions and instruments that insulate the people's rights and freedoms. We believe in the sanctity of basic rights and freedoms of association, movement and speech as well as the protection and institutionalization of important rights such as the right to work, education, health and shelter.

It is because of our unadulterated belief in the sanctity of people's rights that we believe a new, people-driven Constitution for Zimbabweans and by Zimbabweans is key in moving a further milestone in our tortuous journey towards a truly democratic society. We believe in the institutionalization of the human rights in a new Constitution underpinned by strong independent Commissions that stand ready to guard the people's basic rights and freedoms.

The MDC urges the inclusive government to move with speed towards the direction of a new Constitution that guarantees the people's unfettered freedoms. Human rights are at the epicenter of economic development and the prosperity of any nation. The inclusive government must ensure that we have institutions and independent Commissions such as the Human rights Commission which help entrench a democratic culture which respects people's rights in Zimbabwe.

The MDC is a party of excellence. We believe in delivering real change to the people. We believe in providing and guaranteeing dignity, hope security, freedom and prosperity.

Together to the end, marching to a new Zimbabwe.
