MDC condemns disruption of ZCTU march
Movement for Democratic Change (MDC)
September 14, 2009

The MDC condemns Saturday's violent disruption by the police of a peaceful march organised by the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU).

The MDC, a party that was mainly born out of the sweat, toil and blood of the labour movement, is greatly disturbed that seven months after the formation of the inclusive government, the rights of the people of Zimbabwe continue to be violated in clear contradiction of the Constitution of Zimbabwe.

The MDC treasures and values the rights of the workers and the people in general and we take great exception when basic human rights are trampled upon.

We deplore strongly the actions of the armed police who used unnecessary and illegal force to disrupt the ZCTU gathering and urge the inclusive government, particularly the co-Ministers of Home Affairs, to investigate this matter and to make a public denunciation of the actions of the police.

The inclusive government should make sure that the constitutional rights of citizens are upheld and that State security agents should stop using unnecessary force on the people.

The MDC is a party of excellence. We treasure and respect people's rights and freedoms, especially basic rights of speech, movement and assembly. We are committed to delivering real change to the people of Zimbabwe.

Together to the end, marching to a new Zimbabwe.
