Defence
forces should be non-partisan
Movement
for Democratic Change (MDC)
August 08,
2009
On Tuesday 11 August
2009, Zimbabwe will be commemorating Defence Forces Day.
The MDC joins the rest
of the nation in celebrating and saluting the defence forces'
efforts in defending our country.
As we commemorate this
occasion we should remember the courage and fortitude that the defence
forces have exhibited on duty in Zimbabwe, SADC countries and other
United Nations member states.
As we celebrate the Defence
Forces Day, the MDC calls on the defence forces to be depoliticised
so that they serve the interests of the nation above those of any
political party.
The MDC calls on the
inclusive government to urgently revise employment and living conditions
for all our uniformed forces with emphasise on transport and housing
allowances and an opportunity to advance professionally and academically.
More importantly, the
defence forces should be equipped with modern and up to date equipment
geared to helping with domestic and regional emergencies and needs.
The MDC believes that
the defence forces commission should be overhauled so that a new
board with independent and qualified members be appointed in consultation
with commanders of the Zimbabwe National Army and the Air force
of Zimbabwe. In this view, it should be the responsibility of this
commission to review and oversee senior appointments and promotions,
as well as general working conditions and salaries of all personnel.
The MDC further
calls upon all uniformed forces of Zimbabwe to embrace the letter
and spirit of the Global
Political Agreement. It is vital for our uniformed forces to
support, rather than undermine, the structure and hierarchy of the
Inclusive government.
Together we can be able
to build a sustainable foundation for peace and stability in our
country.
Together to the end,
marching to a new Zimbabwe.
