No joy as University of Zimbabwe reopens
Movement for Democratic Change (MDC)
August 05, 2009

The MDC welcomes the move to reopen the University of Zimbabwe but is concerned that the reopening has been overshadowed by critical issues of exorbitant fees, lack of accommodation and the unavailability of running water at the campus.

Very few students turned up on opening day on Monday because of high fees ranging from US403 to US$600.

This amount is very high as parents and guardians cannot afford such astronomical fees. It is also worrying that the students are being forced to seek alternative accommodation as the college authorities cannot reopen the halls of residences citing water shortages.

Education is the country's future. The MDC calls the UZ authorities and the inclusive government to urgently look into the state of the college and restore it to its former status of being the best university in Zimbabwe and the SADC region.
