MDC MP suspended from Parliament
Movement
for Democratic Change (MDC)
July 17,
2009
The MP for Mutare West
in Manicaland Province, Hon. Shuah Mudiwa, has been served with
a suspension letter by the Clerk of Parliament, Austin Zvoma.
The suspension means
that Hon. Mudiwa will not be attending any Parliamentary sessions
and executing his duties as an MP.
Hon. Mudiwa is facing
trumped-up charges of kidnapping a 12 year-old girl in his constituency
in 2007 together with two other MDC supporters. He was sentenced
to seven years in prison last month but he challenged the sentence
and was granted a US$2 000 bail.
The suspension of Hon.
Mudiwa comes a few days after another MP; Hon Mathias Matewu Mlambo
was served with a similar letter of suspension.
The MDC is concerned
by the continued persecution of MDC MPs, officials and party activists.
The suspension of the two MPs is a well orchestrated move by some
elements to whittle down the MDC's majority in parliament.
