MDC
National Council calls for SADC, AU intervention
Movement
for Democratic Change (MDC)
May 18, 2009
The MDC National
Council on Sunday resolved to refer the outstanding issues over
implementation of the Global
Political Agreement (GPA) to SADC and the African Union who
are guarantors of the GPA.
Addressing over 30 000
MDC supporters at a rally at Mucheke Stadium in Masvingo, President
Hon. Morgan Tsvangirai said Zanu PF and Robert Mugabe were reneging
on the GPA.
"We are calling
upon Zanu PF to observe the principle of the Global Political Agreement.
"We do not want
a situation where the lifespan of the agreement is compromised.
We express our disgruntlement and concern about the way Zanu PF
is dragging its feet on outstanding issues," said Hon Tsvangirai.
The national council,
which is the party's supreme decision making body, had met
earlier in the Masvingo Town to deliberate and review the party's
role in the inclusive government and the challenges the same government
continues to face since its formation in February.
The outstanding issues
which remain unresolved three months after the formation of the
inclusive government include the appointment of the permanent secretaries,
ambassadors, the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe governor and the Attorney
General.
The national council
resolved that the Joint Monitoring and Implementation Committee
(JOMIC) should be more effective and monitor the full and proper
implementation of the GPA.
"The transitional
government should urgently deal with the issues of governance, national
healing, democratisation and the rule of law.
"The national
security council must be convened in terms of the law. The Herald
and ZBC must reform and report equally, fairly and consistently
in line with the GPA," the National Council said.
Speaking at the same
rally, MDC secretary-general, Hon Tendai Biti said the party was
unhappy that the issues remained unsolved.
"The failure to
deal with these toxic issues is affecting the life of the inclusive
government," he said.
Hon. Biti also said it
was worrying that most State institutions remained politicised while
MDC supporters continued to be harassed.
"We are unhappy
with the selective application of justice and Zanu PF is showing
its insincerity to the implementation of the agreement," he
said.
This was shown by the
recent incarceration of Chipinge East MP, Hon Mathias Matewu Mlambo.
The rally was also addressed
by the vice president, Hon. Thokozani Khupe, national organising
secretary, Hon. Elias Mudzuri, deputy secretary-general, Hon. Tapiwa
Mashakada and national spokesperson, Nelson Chamisa.
