MDC
activists, journalist granted bail
Movement
for Democratic Change (MDC)
May 13, 2009
They are free
at last! Only if they are not arrested again.
Ghandi Mudzingwa,
the former personal aide of Prime Minister, Hon. Morgan Tsvangirai,
Chris Dhlamini, MDC head of security and journalist, Andrison Manyere
were today granted bail by High Court Judge, Justice November.
They are facing
together with 15 other MDC and civil society activists are facing
trumped-up charges of banditry, terrorism and insurgency.
Justice November
said the three's earlier bail conditions remain. They had
already paid a $US1 000 each and ordered to report at the police
once a week.
The three were
abducted in December last year by State security agents but were
only brought to court more than three weeks after their abduction.
Since then they
have been seeking bail but the State was opposing their bid.
Last month,
the three were granted bail by the High Court but the Attorney General's
Office (AG) moved in and invoked the draconian section of the draconian
Criminal
Procedures and Evidence Act, in order to ensure that bail would
be blocked.
They were re-arrested
four days after being granted bail.
While under
police custody, Mudzingwa, Dhlamini and Manyere were severely tortured
and are currently hospitalised at a private hospital where they
are seeking treatment.
However, the
MDC remains concerned of the safety of seven of its members who
were also abducted under similar circumstances by State security
agents last year but their whereabouts remain unknown.
