  • No need to deny Tsvangirai his passport - that's childish: NCA
    National Constitutional Assembly (NCA)
    October 22, 2008

The National Constitutional Assembly vehemently condemns behaviour exhibited by Mugabe and cronies by denying Morgan Tsvangirai his passport.

It is NCA's belief that every citizen is entitled to his or her constitutional rights among those are freedom to travel. By continuously confining Mr Morgan Tsvangirai to Emergence travel Documents (ETD), ZANU PF is violating Tsvangirai's right to movement.

It is unfortunate that ZANU PF has gone on a vindictive agenda directed toward Morgan Tsvangirai for defeating Mr Mugabe in the past 29 March polls that saw Mugabe tasting the bitter pill of defeat after 28 years at the helm.

The NCA reiterates that until and unless ZANU PF behaves beyond party lines it will continue losing legitimacy to govern and support not only from its foes but even on the few who still support it as the recent behaviour has demonstrated that ZANU PF is nothing but a party driven by emotions rather than reason.

The NCA has never and will never endorse an elite government that fails to respect the wishes of the people. The current proposal of an inclusive government is an example of such governments the NCA will forever oppose as people voted on 29 March for leaders of their choice.

However be that as it may the NCA feels Morgan Tsvangirai as a leader of the dominant party in the House of Assembly and Zimbabwe's Prime Minister needs to respected too hence the NCA calls the Registrar General Tobaiwa Mudede to issue Tsvangirai his passport urgently.

The people of Zimbabwe deserves better leadership than that which is demonstrated by Mugabe and friends as on top of compromising the office of both the President (which Mugabe unfortunately occupies) and Registrar General it also shows how intolerant a government can be to its citizens due to differing political ideologies.

By denying Morgan Tsvangirai his passport Mugabe is clearly demonstrating that he has no respect for the deal brokered by SADC that will see Tsvangirai becoming its Prime Minister hence no respect for guarantors among them SADC, AU and UN.

The NCA urges MDC to spearhead street protests over the violation of constitutional rights not only of Mr Tsvangirai by of ZANU PF's failure to respect SADC's brokered deal as they are already acting in bad faith by still keeping Tsvangirai in confinement.
