MDC MPs still in custody
Movement for Democratic Change (MDC)
September 11, 2008

Six MDC MPs who were arrested during the opening of Parliament last month have been granted bail but the state is still detaining two of them after it appealed against the ruling.

Hon. Bednock Nyaude, MP Bindura South, Hon Shua Mudiwa, Mutare West, Hon. Mathias Mlambo, Chipinge East, Hon. Pearson Mungofa, Highfield East, Hon. Eliah Jembere, Epworth and Hon. Trevor Saruwaka, Mutasa Central were arrested in Harare.

The arrest of the six legislators on trumped up charges of inciting political violence is meant to frustrate the people's project following the MDC's victory in Parliament in the 29 March harmonized elections.

Hon. Nyaude and Hon. Mungofa are still in remand prison after the state appealed against the MPs being granted bail.

The MDC lawyers have since applied to the High Court to have the MPs released.

However, the other four legislators have since been released from jail on bail.

The MDC views this continued harassment and arrest of MDC legislators by the state security agents as a direct affront to the will of the people of Zimbabwe who voted for change on March 29.
