  • Armed police raid MDC headquarters
    Movement for Democratic Change
    June 23, 2008

About 30 armed riot police today raided Harvest House, the MDC Headquarters where hundreds of victims of political violence were seeking temporary shelter.

The reasons for the raid are still unclear, but some of the political violence victims, most of them with serious injuries and in plaster, fled when the armed police besieged the MDC offices.

The police arrested everyone who had remained in the building, including seriously injured political violence victims who could not run away, and drove them away in a bus. They looted MDC office furniture and computers containing party information.

About 1 000 people, fleeing raging State-sponsored violence across the country, had sought temporary refuge at the MDC headquarters. Zanu PF has unleashed a terror campaign against the people for overwhelmingly voting for President Morgan Tsvangirai on the first round of polling on 29 March.

President Morgan Tsvangirai yesterday announced the MDC would not take part the run-off election scheduled for 27 June 2008, describing it as a "charade."
