  • Post- election retribution on MDC members
    Movement for Democratic Change (MDC)
    April 22, 2008

    To All Provincial Executives
    All District Executives
    All Senator Candidates/Elects
    All MP Candidates/Elects
    All Councillor Candidates/Elects

The Party notes with concern the escalation of violence being perpetrated by Zanu Pf militia, solders, traditional leaders and CIO operatives towards our members in the farming and rural areas. This is clearly a retributive exercise designed to punish Zimbabweans for expressing themselves freely in the just ended elections as this comes on the back of our outright victory in the harmonized elections held on the 29th March 2008. It is not a secret to anyone that we won 99 seats in the Parliamentary elections, 26 seats in the Senatorial elections, and Presidential elections where we won by more than 53.5%.

Clearly, this betrays the virtues of the liberation struggle that sought to achieve a one-man one-vote situation. Zimbabweans are now being killed, maimed and harassed for voting for the leaders of their choice and for choosing a New Zimbabwe and a new beginning.

The Mugabe regime has refused to release the results for the presidential elections and these remain unannounced 22 days after the voting date. The Party has resolved that it would not participate in the runoff nor will it take part in the vote recounts currently taking place in 23 constituencies across the country.

In the wake of this escalating violence and the need for the Party to assist victims of the Zanu Pf sponsored violence, all the above addresses are requested to compile a comprehensive list of the victims and those perpetrating violence in your area. The report must also provide details on the nature of violence being perpetrated in your respective areas.

The Party would also want a list of all the individuals that have been arrested or abducted and those whose houses have been burnt or destroyed by Zanu PF militia and the Zimbabwe Police force in your respective areas.

The Party is with the people in these trying times, and is cognizant of the fact that the hour of change is nigh. Zimbabweans have declared that they will not be cowed into perpetual poverty and suffering by a regime that is clueless on how to end the national crisis and create better living standards for the majority of Zimbabweans

We have created a fund to assist all the victims of the Zanu PF madness. We will without doubt be able to rebuild these houses, assist with rehabilitation of the families and provide medical assistance to our members that have been subjected to this torture and harassment.

I expect these lists to be forwarded to my office by Tuesday 29 April 2008 and these must be submitted to Tivaone Gwatidzo on +263912610401, Pascal Gwezere on +26323747462, Lynette Mudehwe on +26323337604 or +263913 011262.

The Secretary General - Tendai Biti
