  • Zimbabweans should defend their votes
Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) Youth Assembly
    April 12, 2008

On the 29th of March 2008 Zimbabweans went to the polls in their millions to elect representatives at council, senatorial, parliamentary and presidential levels.

More than a week has since elapsed and results of what transpired in the presidential race still remain a secret. We are aware of the incestuous relationship between the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) and Zanu P.F - a relationship which will surely plunge Zimbabwe into a yawning abyss. We are fully aware that the delay in announcing the presidential result is at the insistence of Robert Mugabe who is in denial over his loss to Morgan Tsvangirai. We are fully aware that Robert Mugabe, who already is talking of a run-off before the announcement of results, is weighing his options. We are fully aware that he is trying to reverse the will of the people by manipulating results through ZEC. Let it be made abundantly clear that we the youth of the MDC, the generality of the youth in Zimbabwe and indeed even those in ZANU P.F want to see Zimbabwe moving forward. We have lost a lot under the ZANU. PF dictatorship and we want Zimbabwe on its feet soonest.

The people of Zimbabwe have spoken and their voice is sovereign. The arrival of Morgan Tsvangirai cannot be seen as an accident. He is the face of our struggle against dictatorship, against tyranny, bad governance and abuse of human rights. He is the hope that millions have been waiting for. Indeed with him, we are the people we have been waiting for and the change we have been waiting for.

We as the progressive youth of Zimbabwe shall not fold our arms while Zanu PF attempts to take the country back to Stone Age. Zimbabwe is solomonour country and we cannot be held at ransom by a gang of thugs and lunatics who masquerade as leaders. We are the future that we want to create and accordingly we will act to safeguard the same. We are very much aware that when Zanu PF is cornered, its only escape route is violence. We experienced the same in the past years. We are fully aware that Zanu PF has started mobilizing and indoctrinating our brothers and sisters to go and terrorise people in the rural areas. We will respond accordingly. Let this message ring loud and clear to the likes of Jabulani Sibanda and others that the time to play politics and stage manage our lives is come and gone. The honeymoon is over. We shall defend the voice of the people to the very bitter end. We are fully aware of the full implications of engaging this regime but our options are limited to what is available and possible.

The MDC Youth Assembly hereby calls upon every youth out there to stand and defend our vote, to stand and safeguard the will of the people. We urge Mugabe to take heed and listen to the voice of the people. While we are fully cognisant of the fact that we are our own liberators, we implore SADC and AU to quickly move in and avert loss of life. We also implore the United Nations to move in and reign in on Mugabe who, in our opinion has gone rabid and must be stopped at all cost. Lastly, to Morgan Tsvangirai we say well done "Umdala wethu" we are with you all the way through.
