MCDT condemns Parirenyatwa for ongoing violence in Murewa
VMurewa Community Development Trust (MCDT)
April 11, 2008

We would like to draw your attention to the surging violence in Murewa after the 29 March elections. It has come to our attention that the Minister of Health and Child Welfare, David Parirenyatwa, ZANU PF district co-ordinating member, Mavhungire and Bright Makunde, the ZANU PF winning candidate for Senatorial elections are leading a campaign of terror against opposition councillors who were elected in the 29 March polls. We urge the people of Murewa to remain peaceful and ignore the calls by ZANU PF officials to beat up members of the opposition, MDC.

Scores of people were frog-marched to a rally that was held at the Zihute hall that was held today.Shops and other public institutions were forced to shut down as citizens were forced to attend a meeting addressed by Minister Parirenyatwa and his surrogates. We call upon the private sector and donor agencies to stop collaborating with David Parirenyatwa who is supposed to be the custodian of peoples' welfare as Minister of Health but is sponsoring violence against opposition activists and those elected on an MDC ticket as councillors.

MCDT strongly condemns violence which is being perpetrated by ZANU PF against the opposition. We challenge the police to investigate the abduction of a youth activist, Kingston Zinhu by suspected CIOs in Murewa. We call upon the law enforcement agencies to swoop in on ZANU PF youths fanning violence and bring them to justice.
