Zimbabwe's opposition leader Tsvangirai has squashed reports that
he is prepared to clash with Robert Mugabe in the presidential run
off within a period of 21 days as stipulated by law.
Tsvangirai who
was invited to attend a SADC's
emergency meeting in Zambia said his party had won the elections
and would what so ever not participate in the run off. MDC secretary
general Tendai Biti confirmed the latest development saying "We
held a meeting today and we resolved that we will not participate
in a re-run of the election He said his President would attend Saturday's
emergency summit of southern African leaders in Zambia, where he
was expected to censure President Robert Mugabe for keeping the
nation waiting for quite a long time.
SADC called
for the meeting to rectify the situation between the ruling Zanu
PF and the MDC Tsvangirai which have been at each other's s throats
way back before the harmonized elections.
President Thabo Mbeki
who has come under fire for his unfruitful tactics confirmed his
participation. The region in general has been heavily criticized
over its traditional reluctance to criticize Mugabe who wants more
five years in office while Zimbabweans continue facing the realities
of the harsh economy.
MDC castigated the SADC
observers for declaring that the elections were free and fair yet
it only existed in the world of imagination.
The world has also expressed
concern over the delay in announcing results and the summit will
be a good platform for Morgan Tsvangirai to pressurize President
Mugabe to announce the results and accept the outcome of the polls.
Meanwhile Mbeki is expected in the Mozambican capital Maputo today
for economic talks, raising speculation of a possible meeting between
him and the Zimbabwean opposition leader.
