    Movement for Democratic (MDC)
    September 11, 2006

In its resolution at the party Congress held in Harare on 19 March 2006, the MDC made it clear that elections are not the exclusive way of attaining peaceful and democratic change in Zimbabwe. In that resolution, we said we would engage in a sustained programme of democratic mass confrontation against the regime in alliance with workers and other bodies and organizations under the Broad Alliance who share the same principles and goals as ourselves.

Civic society and other political groups came together on 29 July 2006 at the Save Our Country Convention in Harare. One of the key resolutions at that Convention was the agreement to forge a common and united front against the dictatorship by engaging in peaceful, lawful and constitutional mass action against the same. We pledged to support all activities pursuant to that resolution and we will all support Wednesday's workers' demonstrations that will be held under the able leadership of the ZCTU. We fully support the ZCTU strike. After all, the working people of Zimbabwe, being the ZCTU membership, are the core constituency of our party. In this regard, the MDC and its members will take part in the workers' action.

We are however aware that the dictator wants to unleash violence through the use of state security agents, the notorious Green Bombers and other repressive agents. We condemn the regime's perennial desire to assault our rights to freedom of expression and movement. Violence and military repression cannot stop an idea whose hour has come. In our view, the hour of change is now.

    Hon Tendai Biti, MP
    MDC Secretary-General
