  • Zimbabwe: The life of lamentation struggle and restlessness
    Andrew M Manyevere
    September 01, 2008

Yet in that struggle has come a mature and united Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) Party who will defy the world on who should run and govern Zimbabwe hereafter. The bells are ringing of how cruel Robert Mugabe may decide to take the next stage of the country-s suffering, sadly though, with implicit consent of some of the SADC countries which makes the case of Zimbabwe struggle all that full of lamentations.

The article below makes it clear that in Zimbabwe history will always be told of a one man band who toiled hard for self and built not the country but houses which are equal if not far beyond the scale of some of the riches business people of the world. To believe that it is in Zimbabwe where at independence in April 1980 our currency was equivalent to the USA Dollar, which people survived on a wage meaningful and sustainable, that even though discrepancies existed rule of law was visibly enforced; makes the road walked by Zanu-pf a complete mockery on governance and achievement. That Mr Robert Mugabe still cries to stand as a president after successfully managing to create a truly failing state of Zimbabwe; shows the incapacity of thinking and appreciation in Zanu-pf leadership, in particular its head. Democracy, no doubt, is not perceived as a process by Zanu-PF but as an event. This leads to a serialized chain of events culminating in; beating, bribery; corruption, vandalism, torture, arrest without an indictment and killing; all of which completely puzzles the normal people as to the sanity within Zanu-PF party.

Mugabe has failed to bring harmony by ruling with an iron feasted mode which now confuses him to turn on blame for the sake of blame speech. Mr Mugabe talks as if he is or was an outsider to his own government and ministers he appointed. He sees the MDC Parliamentarians and thinks he may impress them to think he is a good fellow; a naive assumption based on how he has run down those who criticized him in all the years past. Because Zanu-PF is discontent of his personal style of leadership which does not bring harmony, he would prefer ditching them for some "new" blood from the MDC.

That trick and game is reaching its sunset days. The MDC was born and survives out of hardships created by Zanu-pf and limitation artificial created by Zanu-PF. A party which confesses to be negotiating yet at the same time torturing those you negotiate with, cannot make any thread of common sense but only to be classified as barbaric. Zanu-pf has climaxed her barbaric political cheating behaviour, so repulsive that even her very strong supporters can only be tied to it out of fear of punitive measures if he remains in power by force of violence and with explicit blessing of some of the SADC Leaders, particularly the current chairman Mr Thabo Mbeki.

Robert Mugabe has no concept of unity. If his compelling of Zimbabwe African People Union ( Zapu) led by J Nkomo in 1987 into some amalgamation which bore Zanu-PF (Patriotic Front), with a preamble which begins unity by the exiling of the late Joshua Nkomo who he would have killed had he not jumped the boarder in a woman-s dress: Then no wonder why Morgan Tsvangirai cannot fail to sport the danger used many years ago which can be easily used to bury him politically. Mr Mugabe has come a long way talking about unity only to buy time and emerge on a stronger hand as Zanu submerging the rest. This time the people of Zimbabwe many of who are born out of these tribulations and experienced in the game of delay tactics, have resolved to play that game on Robert Mugabe and his party; employing simple methods of democracy. Despite painful effort by Mr Thabo Mbeki to resuscitate his friend and colleague Mugabe, the way forward is not good at all for Mr Mugabe. He is living in borrowed time whichever way he faces.

MDC and every Zimbabwean cannot be deceived by flowery speeches of this old politician turned tyrant any longer now as it was then in the 1980s. His record has broken and pieces cannot be picked and none wants to piece them together anyway. His power base, the army, shall soon be a thing of the past since many, like the retired General V. Zvinavashe, have since opened their eyes to the content and substance of the critics of the Old man. The prophecy of Zvinavashe-s speech after the 29 March 2008 elections were telling and shaming of the Zanu-PF guru. He decried people of torture as nonsense accepting that people must admit that MDC has beaten Zanu-PF and people are our relations, let-s treat them well and let them rule. The proceedings in the Parliament of 25 August 2008 have shown that where ever there is rule of law MDC will take Zanu-PF to the cleaner faster without effort. The reason why Zanu-PF has sought a five year transition period while MDC asks for a transition of less than two years, period in the current talks that are threatened from the very illegal acts of Mr Robert Mugabe under direction of the mediator, Mr Thabo Mbeki.

Mr Mugabe-s accusation upon middle class as cause to his failure to run the country is more of an excuse than the truth. The so called middle class is all his creation who has supported him oil his oppressive system. Yes true they are just like parasites which are why the economy is failing to improve.

But this is complementary to his wishes which were to create puppets on him which has turned up yielding the opposite effect on economic development or growth. The so called middle class created by Mr Mugabe has no concept of the worker but self enriching "brief case business men." Is it any wonder that fruit of evil singles its weakness by results-unemployment, bad roads, poor health system, no rule of law etc- out no matter how long the effort to conceal.

Mr Mugabe ostrich approach to realities of ordinary Zimbabwean animosity against his poverty in good governance has send him ignoring that MDC has visited all SADC countries to show cause of our case of being oppressed and tortured for telling the truth on evils committed by Mugabe-s government. Farmers cannot be encouraged by ere verbalizing policy but by actualizing the support of good agriculture policy with strong fiscal support. The mistake Mugabe and his crew have done continue to be highlighted even today in the selfish thinking of Zanu-PF leadership. Its not for the president to play Mr smart and advice of what crops farmers should grow. On the contrary the President must be advised by the experts in a form of policy. This is truly Mugabe style of administration to force minimum wages down industry-s throat and expect motivation.

Mr Mugabe does not want to tell the world that apart from the borrowings from IMF and world bank, the Paris Club is owed much money by municipalities and parastals bodies which is running up to US$3.9 billion. How can anyone Honor release of goods to such a poor customer who cannot pay his debt? Mr Mugabe must not simplify what he has done by wishing the west were to blame for the running down of Zimbabwe, no, never. He failed to control his avarice encouraging many of his ministers to built homes abroad and store money abroad. He become an example of building luxurious homes when the nation is starving. His regime is on recording for selling sugar abroad while people have no sugar in the villages. Drugs meant for the common people and given free are taken and charged exorbitantly by, among others, his cousins the Leo Mugabe and others. This Mugabe government has called entrepreneurship.

Zanu-PF has failed to run simple farming or to organized people into systematic farming. Admission is a very good start to trusting each other if we want to build our Zimbabwe. It-s amazing that Mr. Mugabe sees sense in not being blamed to the extent where he legislates against it and yet he is the biggest culprit in blaming anyone including the western countries any opposition party or neighbouring country.

It is a fair statement to note that most of our neighbours have employed Mbeki-s quiet diplomacy which in reality promotes vainness and encourages corruption. There is corruption which is condemned by all workers in the region. COSSATU of South Africa, for example, has single handed blamed the SADC leadership for favouring nakedly Mugabe by allowing him to flout on the Memorandum of Understanding. To open Parliament before talks are concluded is in breach of the MOU, yet Mugabe wants to go on and form a government with cabinet appointments. Africa should always remember that her judges are her own citizens.

Mr Mugabe has ruled for twenty eight years, how long should a man whose popular vote on the declining concurrently with a life span more stretched now than then? While America create history of bring new faces into politics African leadership creates the legacy of irrelevant continuity.

As Zimbabweans we must discount irrelevant application to the west even when we are responsible for the mistakes. It-s irresponsible for any leader to take to the strategy of accusing others for one-s mistakes. This is what we have experienced, seen, heard and continue to feed from the mouth of Robert Mugabe. We need move on and make progress for the sake of our young generation. We need to reflect on the past with sober behaviour and look into the future without hindrances or obstacles.

America and Britain have very little to do with the hundred Zimbabweans Mugabe killed just this past three months and continue to kill even this very hour. Britain has nothing to do with hunger in Zimbabwe other than that all the people we have send packing are well come in the neighbouring states and doing very well. Mugabe has only made Zimbabwe much poorer by giving to other African nations what he could have kept to grow and develop the economy of our great country.

The herald editorial staff must remember that we do not hate Mr Mugabe but his acts and works of retribution and vengeance on the poor and innocent. We hate his failure to use rule of law. We hate his encouragement of nepotism and corruption. We hate his killing of other Zimbabweans. Fellow citizens if we cannot see what is wrong in these act of barbarism, no wonder why Mr Mugabe has had a prolonged time ruling over us.

Let-s be one against what is wrong. Let-s agree to disagree and agree on fact of principle and on the basis of agreed national values and interests. Let-s make our country a pride it has been and show the quality of our rich culture founded on two distinct languages and lovely personality of love and hospitality. God bless Zimbabwe and bless people driven leadership for the next term of office in our country.

Morgan Tsvangirai may remain one of our endowed leader by his very modest education, humane character and people centred leadership of proven humility. Instead of condemning we have to give God thanks giving and surround him with good counsel. So far he has stood with the people based needs, guided by the love for others which is why the quest for executive powers is not for him as a person by a respect to the people who vote him to beat Robert Mugabe. Mr Mugabe should accept the verdict and pass the torch on.
