  • 2008 harmonised elections - Index of articles

  • Congratulations Zimbabwe, congratulations MDC
    Mutsa Murenje
    April 09, 2008

Without much skirting, first and foremost I would want to express my profound gratitude to the people of Zimbabwe for the politic and prudent move they made during the just - ended harmonized elections of March 29, 2008. The move to show the ruining party ZANU PF and the octogenarian tyrant Robert Mugabe the exit door. This in itself is a clear and pellucid indication that no one is invincible not even Mugabe. Ask Zambians they will tell you the same because this happened to Kaunda when he lost control of Zambia to none other than Chiluba, the short man (as he is affectionately known) apparently a trade unionist-cum politician just like our newly elected President of the Republic of Zimbabwe Morgan Richard Tsvangirai after ruining the economy for 27 Years.

Although results of the presidential plebiscite are yet to be announced, the most savant and erudite amongst us know very well that the dictator and his bootlickers were caught unawares especially considering the fact that they had 'outright- victories in previous elections especially from the year 2000. For this reason, they are yet to come to terms with their defeat. They want time, perhaps a little more time to recover from the traumatic shock and debilitating, if not diabetic, denial situation that they find themselves in. It is indeed a truism that the history of Zimbabwe was re-written on the 29th of March and that Zimbabwe will never be the same will never be the same again. It is in light of this illumination that I am overly sanguine that the Tsvangirai administration will help us realize our dream of freedom and democracy, albeit 28 years after ' independence -.

What contributed to the demise of ZANU PF and its leader, in my opinion, is the fact that extremes of poverty are not only an outrage in rural areas but also in high density suburbs in urban areas. What boggles the mind, however, is that this poverty was largely unseen and misperceived by the ousted dictator and his team of unscrupulous and unprincipled leaders. For those trapped in poverty however, things are clearer. Extremes of material and social deprivation can narrow awareness and warp, embitter and kill. So it seems all the more right to concentrate attention on the 'last-, on the hundreds of thousands of largely unseen people in rural and urban areas who are poor, weak, isolated, vulnerable and powerless. Whatever one-s ideology it seems right to reverse the forces which exploit these people and make and keep them physically and socially wretched. What we want to see coming to an end during your term President Tsvangirai is a condition of life so characterized by malnutrition, illiteracy, disease, squalid surroundings, high infant mortality, and low life expectancy because this is far beneath any reasonable definition of human decency.

    I rest my case.
