Where were you?
Bev Reeler
September 30, 2004

Yesterday Jenni and 5 WOZA women walked into Harare after their epic march from Bulawayo, and having to leave 60 women arrested in Chegutu. These women of all ages, walking in slip-slops - some carrying babies, marched half way across our country in protest of the NGO bill which will ultimately impact on the lives of all Zimbabweans - from relief for HIV/AIDS to our personal safety. They were marching for all of us.

Instead of being welcomed into Harare by cheering and singing crowds of women celebrating their journey - the 5 or 6 of them walked in on their own - no greeting other than from the police outside Meikles who swooped down to arrest them (and the baby).

All that was needed was an hour of our day to stand on the street side and honour their journey - nobody was there.

When we ask ourselves why all of this is happening, and 'why 'they' don't do something?' - the answer is clear for us all to see.
