  • Kenyan journalist faces possible deportation
    MISA-Zimbabwe
    July 26, 2013

Charles Omondi, a journalist with the Kenyan newspaper The Nation who was denied entry into the country on 25 July 2013 upon arrival at the Harare International Airport will likely be deported today, an immigration officer has said.

Omondi was detained at the Harare airport for not having acquired the necessary clearance and accreditation required for foreign journalists to cover the election. MISA Zimbabwe’s Media Lawyers Network (MLN) failed to assist with legal representation as they were denied access by immigration officials who argued that Omondi was technically not on Zimbabwean soil as he had not yet gone through the Immigration office.

The journalist is expected to be deported today, but it still remains unclear whether he has already been removed from the country.

MISA will continue to appraise you on the developments as they unfold.
