Harare to recycle litter

After realizing
that it has been throwing away litter which can be recycled, the
Harare City Council says it is going to introduce special bins which
residents will dump rubbish which can be recycled.
Council Director
of Amenities, Dombo Chibanda told Talking Harare in an interview
that they have engaged a local company and individuals that will
pick up bins for recycling litter in an effort to restore the city
to its sunshine days.
"Very
soon households will be provided with a number of bins that have
different colours for different type of garbage and litter so that
when refuse vehicles come to pick litter, they will know which one
to collect for recycling," Chibanda said.
This development
was also confirmed by Garbage Bag Collectors (Pvt) Ltd Director
Rusell Zishiri whose company has acquired 25 vehicles that will
be used to collect used cans and plastics from residents. 'The
method and model we are going to use of different colours of bins
is copied from developing countries that have recycled garbage for
the benefit of the residents and more will be done to educate the
locals,' explained Zishiri.
According to
environment experts, recycling old junk not only benefits the environment
but breathes new life into old objects that were once destined for
the landfill and has been used to make other items such as carpets,
toys and also provide employment.
The ongoing
importation of food and bottled has contributed to the littering
of cities in the country as importers do not have effective ways
of disposing off used bottles and plastics.
Meanwhile, the
US Embassy has partnered with Miracle Missions, an organization
that organizes clean-ups campaigns in Harare and they have installed
bins in Harare Gardens.
