VMCZ holds civil society meeting and road-show in Kwekwe
Voluntary
Media Council of Zimbabwe
May 21, 2012
The Voluntary
Media Council of Zimbabwe (VMCZ) last week on Friday held a meeting
with civil society to appraise them of the media complaints mechanism
and media's reporting of issues.
The meeting
was attended by editors from Kwekwe and the newly elected Zimbabwe
National Editors Forum (Zinef) chairperson, Mr Brian Mangwende.
Mangwende in
his address to civil society leaders present said there was a need
for the media to desist from engaging in practises that compromised
media professionalism. He said it was Zinef's major challenge
to ensure that reporters conditions were improved and that they
refrained from taking bribes.
He further said
his organisation was also working towards engaging editors from
the Zimbabwe Association of Editors (ZAE) to come together and have
one editors forum so that editors can speak with one voice.
"There
is no need for editors to belong to several groups such as ZAE,
together with my committee we are working towards bringing all editors
under one roof so that we can speak with one voice on issues affecting
editors, as it is right now we are not united,"Mangwende said.
On Saturday,
VMCZ held a road-show in the city centre where the issue of self-regulation
was explained to residents of Kwekwe. Several dance groups among
them Harare based Red Angels, entertained the large crowd that turned
out for the event.
