Voluntary Media Council of Zimbabwe
November 01, 2011

Parties Complaint Status
Federation of African Media Women of Zimbabwe (FAMWZ) v/s The Sunday Mail FAMWZ has launched a complaint with the Media Complaints Committee (MCC) over an article headed 'Double tragedy for rape victim' published in the Sunday Mail of 18 September 2011. FAMWZ says in the article the Sunday Mail published a picture of an 18-year-old girl who was raped and infected with HIV. FAMWZ says the Sunday Mail should have concealed the face of the victim in light of stigma and discrimination. FAMWZ wants the Sunday to apologise to the young woman and to in future protect rape victims by concealing their faces. The MCC has written to the Sunday Mail on the matter and is awaiting a response.
Charity Maruta v/s Daily News, NewsDay and the Herald Charity Maruta has lodged a complaint with the MCC against News Day, The Daily News and The Herald in the manner that they have portrayed the supposedly three women rapists arrested by police in Gweru early this month. Maruta says the media organisations have taken it upon themselves to be the judges and have convicted the three women before they even appeared in court. She says this is irresponsible reporting of the highest degree. She wants the media to report the matter responsibly.
Letters have been written to the concerned newspapers.
