Public hearings for free to air broadcasting licensees commence
MISA-Zimbabwe
October 18, 2011
The Broadcasting Authority of Zimbabwe on 18 October 2011 convened
the first public hearing for prospective free-to-air radio licensees,
with KISS FM being the first to appear before the Authority.
The Broadcasting
Authority of Zimbabwe (BAZ) is expected to conduct three more public
hearings which will be chaired by the Chairperson, Dr. Tafataona
Mahoso.
The BAZ panel
which was constituted in terms of the Commissions of Inquiry Act
and the Broadcasting
Services Act section 10 (6) comprised of commissioners; Dr.
Tafataona Mahoso, Chief Gambiza, Colonel Gwai Dube, Mrs Erica Mususa,
Dr Vimbai Chivaura, Rev. Matuvira, Ms. Charity Moyo, Dr. Chada and
Eng. Muganyura. Kiss FM was represented by its directors Douglas
Munatsi, Musi Khumalo, Oliver Mutukudzi, Tony Ndoro, and Sharon
Mugabe.
In their presentation
before the panel, KISS FM directors among other things revealed
that the station would have an interim arrangement with ZBC under
which it would broadcast news from the public broadcaster during
its drive-time segments until such a time it is in a position to
setup its own news team.
MISA Zimbabwe
is deeply concerned by this proposed partnership as it poses a serious
threat to the envisaged diversity of views that should accompany
the licensing of new players. Such an arrangement will render KISS
FM a relay station whose role is to amplify the very same propaganda
that the new players should liberate Zimbabweans from.
The remaining
public hearings have been scheduled as follows:
- 20 October
2011- Zimpapers
- 25 October
2011- AB Communications
- 27 October
2011- Radio VOP
The hearings
start at 09.00hrs.
MISA calls on
members of the public to attend these public hearings so that they
can make their own objections and interventions.
