VMCZ visits Mashonaland East
Voluntary Media Council of Zimbabwe
October 14, 2011

This week the VMCZ met with media stakeholders and civil society organisations based in Marondera in Mashonaland East province. The meetings were to acquaint members of civil society and stakeholders on the operations of the VMCZ and the Media Complaints Committee (MCC).

The VMCZ took time to explain the benefits of self-regulation over statutory regulation and participants and stakeholders at the meeting successfully re-affirmed their commitment to the principle of media self-regulation. The meeting also discussed the issue of decentralising the operations of VMCZ through establishing a provincial adjudicating committee in Mashonaland East. Provincial adjudicating committees already exist in Gweru, Kwekwe, Bulawayo, Masvingo and in Mutare.

Also discussed at the meeting was the state of the Zimbabwe media and strategies of increasing the public's knowledge of the VMCZ complaints mechanism. Participants also felt that it was important for state media to be part and parcel of the VMCZ and it was explained that a seat is already reserved for Zimpapers and the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation in the VMCZ board.

The meeting attended by about 40 participants also discussed the country's media laws and the VMCZ code of conduct.
