MISA-Zimbabwe held Annual General Meeting
MISA-Zimbabwe
July 04, 2011
MISA-Zimbabwe
elected a new National Governing Council (NGC) at its elective Annual
General Meeting (AGM) held on Saturday July 2 2011 at the Crown
Plaza Monomotapa Hotel in Harare. The AGM was by attended by about
90 members.
The election,
held in terms of Section 10.2 of the MISA regional constitution
for all the 11 national chapters, saw the election of former Vice
Chairperson Njabulo Ncube to Chairperson and freelance journalist
Kumbirai Mafunda as his deputy. Senior journalists Kelvin Jakachira
and Lifaqane Nare were elected committee members.
Their election
followed the adoption of a constitutional amendment that trims the
size of the National Governing Council from seven members to five.
According to the amendment, the NGC shall consist of a Chairperson,
a Deputy, a Treasurer with a finance/accounting background and two
committee members. Since no member submitted their applications
for the post of the treasurer, because of the financial/accounting
background requirement, the AGM resolved that a female treasurer
with requisite qualifications should be co-opted by the board as
a means to fulfilling the gender quota as prescribed by the constitution.
In his acceptance
speech, the newly elected Chairperson pledged to address membership
grievances he said he had received in his position as Vice Chairman.
He also pledged to build on the successes of the previous board
in the organization's fight for media freedom and access to
information. His deputy concurred, noting that though the struggle
for the total liberation of the media space was far from over, MISA-Zimbabwe
should be proud of the achievements it has registered under difficult
circumstances.
The annual Advocacy
committee awards were this year given to the Gweru committee for
its innovation in executing its mandate, including fundraising for
activities without the secretariat's assistance. The other
award was jointly won by the Bulawayo and Harare committees for
their Free Nqobani Ndlovu campaign following his arrest.
