MDC-T youths threaten ZBC crew
MISA-Zimbabwe
June 22, 2011

According to the state owned daily broadsheet The Herald of 22 June 2011, journalists from the state owned Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) were on Sunday 19 June 2011 allegedly barred from covering a MDC-T rally at Mkoba Stadium in Gweru by the Movement for Democratic (MDC-T) youths who accused the broadcaster of reporting "negatively and falsehoods" about their party.

The youths reportedly accused one of the crew members of wearing a Zanu PF T-shirt under his clothes.

The crew's bureau chief Jackie Gwemende, cameraman Happyton Linday and driver Samuel Mdhluli were initially allowed entry into the stadium before the youths followed and ordered them to leave the venue. They hastily got into their car and fled.

When other journalists drew nearer to find out what was going on, it is alleged that a group of MDC-T youths swarmed the ZBC vehicle and threatened to beat up the whole team.

The news crew was allowed into the venue after a team from the MDC-T leader Morgan Tsvangirai intervened.
