MISA-Zimbabwe sets up first rural community radio initiative
MISA-Zimbabwe
October 18, 2010
MISA-Zimbabwe
on 16 October 2010 set up the first rural community radio in Ntepe,
40kms South-West of Gwanda town.
Ntepe community radio station is the first rural
community radio initiative in Zimbabwe. All the other community
radio initiatives in the country are located in the urban areas
of Harare, Bulawayo, Gweru, Kwekwe, Mutare, Hwange, Kadoma and Mutare.
MISA-Zimbabwe was instrumental in the formation of seven of the
initiatives and continues to support activities of the all the initiatives
under its campaign for broadcasting diversity in the country.
The inaugural
stakeholders meeting for the community radio initiative was held
at the Ntepe business centre and attended by over 100 over locals,
business community and civic society members. Chief Nhlamba Ndlovu
officially opened the meeting. The meeting conscientised the community
on the way a community radio initiative would operate and its benefits
in the long-run, should the government open up for community broadcasters
in the country.
At the end of the meeting a 7 member steering committee
was nominated, which will organise alternative broadcast activities
that will conscientise the community on the concept and benefit
of community radio in Ntepe; as well as increase the support for
community radio in their community. The committee comprises of journalists
and some representatives from the community.
Community radio is localised broadcasting run and
owned by either a geographical community or a community of interest.
MISA-Zimbabwe is currently running a broadcasting
campaign, calling upon the authorities to open up the airwaves for
Zimbabwe to have a three-tier broadcasting system that includes
public, commercial and community broadcasting. The state-controlled
Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation has maintained a monopoly in the
broadcasting industry.
