Two Zimbabwean journalists scoop regional Gender and the Media Awards

Two Zimbabwean
journalists on 15 October 2010 scooped regional awards at the fourth
Gender and Media Summit Awards convened by Gender Links, Gender
and Media Southern Africa (GEMSA) and the Media Institute of Southern
Africa (MISA) in Johannesburg.
Emmanuel Nkomo,
a journalist with the new short wave radio station, Zimbabwe Community
Radio (ZICORA) scooped in the community radio category prize. He
won the prize for a programme flighted on his radio talk show, Zvevanhukadzi
that takes a personal look at issues of HIV and AIDS.
Joyce Jenje
Makwenda won the inaugural award for the new category, Triple T
(Tackling Taboo Topics) award. Joyce received the award for her
commitment to writing on taboo issues such as menstruation and women
in the shebeen business. Joyce is one of Zimbabwe's senior
female journalists, a historian, archivist and musician. She contributes
regularly to a column in The Herald.
A total of 17
journalists and two media houses from countries within the region
walked away with prizes from the 20 categories. They received the
awards for news items covering issues ranging from xenophobia to
female genital mutilation. Zimbabwe submitted up to 23 entries across
the categories.
The Gender and
the media awards recognise media practitioners based on their ability
to mainstream gender issues into local reporting.
Award winners
represented Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Lesotho, Madagascar,
Malawi, Mauritius, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia and
Zimbabwe.
