ZMC receives applications
MISA-Zimbabwe
May 06, 2010

The Zimbabwe Media Commission (ZMC) has reportedly started receiving applications from media owners, with at least five new applicants making enquiries on the registration procedures.

According to the weekly The Financial Gazette by 4 May 2010, ZMC Chairperson Godfrey Majonga said among the new players only The Newsday, had completed and submitted its form for application for a license. The Newsday is a subsidiary daily of the Alpha Media Holdings (AMH) which publishes the The Zimbabwe Independent and The Standard weeklies. The Newsday publishes 4 pages weekly in The Independent.

Commissioner Majonga said that journalists and media houses were also renewing their licenses and accreditation.

Prospective media owners are expected to among other documents produce a cash flow statement, house style book, code of conduct for their employees, mission statement, code of ethics, editorial charter, market analysis, a dummy of the upcoming product and balance sheet projection for consideration.

Background

The ZMC was set to receive applications for registration by media houses with effect from 4 May 2010 in a development that raises hope for the return of the banned The Daily News and other new publications. Zimbabwe has not had privately owned daily newspapers since the ban in 2003 of The Daily News and Daily News on Sunday by the defunct Media and Information Commission in terms of the draconian Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act (AIPPA).

Application fees for mass media services have fixed at US$500 and registration fees registration fees at US$1 500. Publishers renewing their licences will pay US$100; accreditation fees for individual journalists has been set at US$10.
