ZMC ready to license new publications
MISA-Zimbabwe
May 04, 2010
The statutory
Zimbabwe Media Commission (ZMC) is set to receive applications for
registration by media houses with effect from 4 May 2010 in a development
that raises hope for the return of the banned The Daily News and
other new publications.
Zimbabwe has
not had privately owned daily newspapers since the ban in 2003 of
The Daily News and Daily News on Sunday by the defunct Media and
Information Commission in terms of the draconian Access
to Information and Protection of Privacy Act (AIPPA).
Alpha Media
Holdings (AMH) which publishers of the Zimbabwe Independent and
Standard weeklies, welcomed the announcement by the ZMC saying this
brings to an end the group's long wait to publish its daily newspaper,
Newsday. "It's a major development. After having waited for
two years to get a license for NewsDay, it is now a matter of time
before we can get the go ahead to start publishing," said AMH
chief executive officer Raphael Khumalo.
This development
comes in the wake of the gazetting of registration fees for media
houses and accreditation of journalists on 30 April 2010. "All
new applications for both registrations of mass media services and
accreditation of journalists can be lodged with the commission on
the same date (4 May 2010)," said the ZMC in statement.
Application
fees for mass media services have fixed at US$500 and registration
fees registration fees at US$1 500. Publishers renewing their licences
will pay US$100. Accreditation fees for individual journalists has
been set at US$10.
