The government has pegged prohibitive registration fees for foreign media organisations intending to operate in Zimbabwe this year.

A government gazette released on January 2 indicates that application fees for permission to operate a representative office of a foreign mass media service or a news agency have been fixed at US$10 000, while complimentary permit administration fees have been pegged at US$2 000.

Complimentary accreditation administration fees for journalists from within the Southern African Development Community (SADC) have been set at US$150 while those coming from outside SADC will have to pay US$200.

A local journalist working for a foreign media organisation will pay US$1 000 and an additional US$3 000 for accreditation. Temporary accreditation for a foreign journalist has been pegged at US$500 and an additional US$1 000 for full time accreditation.

The money will be paid to the Media and Information Commission, which will also decide what to charge for a lost media accreditation card.

For local media practitioners, a mass media company will now be required to pay Zd10 and Zd30 billion application and registration fees respectively, while $20 billion will be paid for renewal of registration.

A news agency will pay Zd5 and Zd20 billion for application and registration fees respectively while renewal of registration will attract $10 billion.

Zimbabwean journalists working for local media will pay Zd1 million in application fees and Zd3 million for accreditation. A local freelance journalist will pay Zd1.5 million as application fees. A penalty for late renewal of accreditation has been set at Zd100 000 per day while late renewal for registration fees have been pegged at Zd500 000 per day.
