Editors
added to EU sanctions list
MISA-Zimbabwe
July 28, 2008
Munyaradzi Huni and Caesar
Zvayi editors with the state-controlled Zimpapers have been slapped
with European Union (EU) targeted sanctions which has seen a number
of senior ZANU PF and government officials being issued with travel
bans and the freeze of their assets.
Huni is the political
editor with The Sunday Mail while Zvayi was formerly employed in
a similar capacity with The Herald, Zimpapers flagship national
daily. The EU accuses the two journalists of reportedly "whipping
up" the terror campaign before and during the 27 June 2008
presidential election run-off resulting in their being added to
the 168 individuals slapped with similar sanctions.
The decision of the EU
Council to increase the list of individuals in the Zimbabwe to 168
is aimed at ensuring that they will not be allowed to travel to
or through Europe and their bank accounts held in European institutions
will be frozen.
MISA-Zimbabwe Chairperson
Loughty Dube said he was ignorant of the specific reasons for the
EU to proceed in that manner adding that he could therefore not
comment much on the matter but nevertheless urged journalists to
bound by the ethics and codes of the profession.
Mathew Takaona,
the president of the Zimbabwe
Union of Journalists (ZUJ) said it was "unfortunate precedent"
for journalists to be put under sanctions adding that the two were
not members of the union and was therefore not in a position to
comment further on the issue.
