  • Prime-time Daily Monitoring Report No. 20
    Media Monitoring Project Zimbabwe (MMPZ)
    April 07, 2008

This report monitors the political content of ZBC's radio and television programming especially issues relating to the March 29 elections, during prime time listening and viewing. (It does not include the content of the main news bulletins, which form the basis of separate research).

All stations (Zimbabwe Television, Spot FM and Radio Zimbabwe) are monitored from 0700hrs-1000hrs, 12 noon-1400hrs and 1700hrs-2300hrs.

    Summary
The information vacuum continued in the country with the national broadcaster, ZBC, unable to update the public on why the electoral authorities were still withholding information on the presidential results. It also failed to air any programmes on other post-election developments.

Current Affairs programmes : None (all stations)

    Politically influenced music
Spot FM aired a song that indirectly referred to the presidential election whose results are still pending. The song Pachigaro Chamambo (the throne) by Andy Brown talks about the sanctity of a king's throne, and discourages people from fighting over it. In today's context, especially in light of the fact that the presidential poll results are already in dispute before they have been announced, the song may be interpreted as pre-empting any possible claims to the presidency by MDC President Morgan Tsvangirai, widely believed to have beaten the sitting president, Robert Mugabe, in the contest.

Political advertising : None (all stations)
