Prime-time
Daily Monitoring Report # 2008 - 14
Media Monitoring Project Zimbabwe (MMPZ)
April 02, 2008
This report monitors
the political content of ZBC's radio and television programming
especially issues relating to the March 29 elections, during prime-time
listening and viewing. (It does not include the content of the main
news bulletins, which form the basis of separate research).
All stations (Zimbabwe
Television, Spot FM and Radio Zimbabwe) are monitored from 0700hrs-1000hrs,
12 noon-1400hrs and 1700hrs-2300hrs.
Summary
ZBC continued with the announcement of House of Assembly election
results. The national broadcaster aired ZEC officials advising the
electorate that the results for the presidential election would
be announced in "due course" since they had started
receiving them. However, election results are still being announced
in a carefully stage managed exercise which keeps the two main parties
at par for the second consecutive day.
Current
Affairs programmes
There were five sessions (at 0040hrs, 0715hrs, 1200hrs, 1830hrs,
and 2015hrs) on ZBC (all stations) in which ZEC announced the House
of Assembly results. Results for 92 constituencies were announced
today. ZANU PF got 47 seats and MDC (Tsvangirai) got 45 seats. To
date ZANU PF has 78 seats, MDC (Tsvangirai) faction 77 seats and
MDC (Mutambara) faction five seats.
During the 1200hrs session,
Lovemore Sekeramayi of ZEC gave the following announcement, "Zimbabwe
Electoral Commission would like to advise the nation that it is
currently receiving the presidential results from the various provinces.
The verification of the results will commence in the presence of
all the candidates or their election agents, once all the results
have been received. Please note that ZEC has been working with the
parties' Chief Election Agents who have also been present
at the National Command Centre and are in full agreement with the
arrangement. Therefore, we would like to urge the nation to remain
patient as we go through this meticulous verification process. The
commission would further like to commend the electorate for showing
political maturity and tolerance before, during and after the elections.
We urge you to continue in that spirit".
As alluded to here, it
remains unclear when the all-important presidential results will
be announced.
There were no other current
affairs programmes containing any political content on any of ZBC's
stations during the day.
