Accreditation fees for media services gazetted

The Minister of Information and Publicity Dr Sikhanyiso Ndlovu on 15 February 2008 gazetted new registration and accreditation fees for mass media services and journalists in terms of the repressive Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act (AIPPA).

In terms of statutory instrument 19 of 2008 the new fees structures are as follows:

Application fee for registration for a mass media service
Application fee . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $5 billion
Registration fee . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .$5 billion.
Renewal of registration . . . . . . .$2 billion

The application fee for a news agency
Application fee . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $2 billion
Registration fee . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ...$3 billion
Renewal registration fee . . . . . . .$2 billion

Local journalists working for local media will pay a total of $11 million ($3 million application fees and $8 million accreditation fee). Local freelance journalists will pay $2, 5 million application fee and $6 million accreditation fees with a complimentary accreditation administration fee of $2 million.

Late renewal of accreditation costs $2 million per day while late renewal of registration costs $5 million a day. The regulations empower the MIC to determine card replacement value.

Local journalists working for foreign media will pay US$1 000 as application fee and an accreditation fee of US$3 000. Temporary accreditation fee for foreign journalists is pegged at US$1 000 and an application fee of US$500.

Application to operate a representative foreign mass media service or news agency will cost US$10 000 and a further US$20 000 for permission to operate and US$2 000 complimentary permit administration fee.

Complimentary accreditation administration fee for journalists within SADC is US$150 with those from other regions paying US$200.
